MY JOURNEY TO FIT
I started working out when I made the decision to lose 40 kilos and I did! I would say more than half of my success was from making better food choices, but the rest from exercise was just as important as it helped me get stronger and leaner. Today I workout to stay in shape and for those little things called endorphins that leave me feeling ‘happier’ after my workouts.
If your goal is to lose fat and get leaner my advise is to consider exercises that build muscle, like strength training (in addition to just cardio). Whereas cardio exercises are great for creating a calorie deficit, you burn calories primarily during the exercise session but very few thereafter. Strength training on the other hand helps you build muscles which boosts your metabolism throughout the day allowing you to burn more calories.
Body weight workouts are some of the most awesome strength training and fat-loss exercises and the best thing about them is you can do them ANYWHERE without needing extra equipment. With exercise however, progression is key and adding weights to your workouts makes the exercises progressively harder and more challenging. Ladies, heavier weights will not make you look like a man *pinky swear* so don't shy away from 'lifting heavy'.
When it comes to exercise though 'one size doesn’t fit all' and that’s ok. Some prefer the gym, others prefer the outdoors and for some, exercise is about incorporating more movement in their day to day, like choosing to take the stairs instead of the elevator. The basic idea should always be to do the best you can, where you are, with what you have.
Still, you can't out train a bad diet so it starts with eating better!
